Education at Smithills

Here at Smithills Open Farm, we love to have school visits. Since we opened in spring 2000 we have had lots of schools, nurseries and other organised groups visit us with large groups of children in tow. Children of all ages, too. Some come from miles away, just to say hello, feed and cuddle our lovely animals.

The farm is a working classroom. It’s brilliant, and you can see the children learning whilst they enjoy themselves. I cannot think of a better way to engage a child and get them excited about animals and farming. And the outdoors. Here at Smithills Open Farm the little ones get to see all the animals close up. They can even feed them. Touch them. And see the cows getting milked or the birds flying. It’s ace.

Here's what one Bolton teacher had to say about her school’s recent visit to Smithills Open Farm: “The children loved all the animals and really enjoyed being able to touch and stroke them, as well as feeding some of them. It is such a good day out, and is was really great value for money.”

As members of Farms for Schools, we encourage schools to link with the curriculum. In particular foundation stage KS1 and KS2. We are more than happy to help you get the best out of your visit. When booking, please talk to us about your requirements.

Kids are welcome to bring their own packed lunch. We have clean areas both inside and outside where they can eat. We also have a cafe that sells hot and cold food, ice creams, snacks and drinks. There's also a small shop where you can get a souvenir of your visit.
